Joy Mauro (Lapka), a Vancouverite with a passion for fashion, opened Turnabout on South Granville in 1978 when she was 23 years old. We were the first consignment shop in Vancouver to be more than just a yard sale or bazaar,” said Mauro. “We opened a fresh, modern retail store.
Joy’s insatiable appetite for fashion, her sense of adventure and youthful enthusiasm proved contagious. Turnabout became a fashion leader in Vancouver and Joy was prominently featured in both local and national print and broadcast media.
Within 10 years, Mauro opened a second outlet on West Broadway, specializing in casual and popular labels for both men and women. “The customer demand was there, we had become computerized and we had staff that really helped the customers. We became known for professional, efficient and honest service.”
After more than 30 successful years of consigning experience in prime neighbourhoods, Turnabout boasts a client list of over 13,000 consignors. “We pride ourselves in providing flavourful, colourful, varied merchandise, Our consigners shop the world.” says Joy. “We’re all things to all people, from the everyday working girl to the Hollywood movie glitz and glitter. We’re the destination in Vancouver for consignors and shoppers alike.”
